On his first EP through oneselfsinger/songwriter phenomenon from Los Angeles small moon emerges as a reborn woman. “Sheddin’ my skin / Versions of myself unraveling / Talking to the nice girl that I’ve been,” she sings on the breezy, upbeat opener. “last time.” As the title of the EP heavily suggests, the first steps on such a journey often lead inwards. Although implementing such drastic changes is sometimes easier said than done, if only because looking in the mirror is not always an easy task. But for Little Luna, such insights aren’t just familiar, they’re necessary. In fact, it was during such meditation that she discovered the titular phrase.
“It was the answer to my question, ‘How can I share my music with the world, in a way that is authentically me?’ I got loud and clear ‘You have to go through me.’ The lyrics to these tracks are a journey through yourself,” Little Luna said of the songs on the EP. “the search for how to rediscover your true self and live from that space. I unlocked something within me by going on this adventure, and my greatest hope is that you, as a listener, will unlock also something in you.
On the first five tracks of through oneself listeners will find a lush, radiant soundscape to let off steam with the little luna. “under the wave, a scintillation of sublime notes of xylophone and soaring acoustics, is a tender invitation from the artist to join her in the depths. “Dive into My Mind” she coos dreamily before warning not to linger in the dark: “It’s a wonderful world when you’re alone / If you stay in it too long, sink like a stone all alone.”
On “glass,” the little luna guides you by the hand through the waves. Bright vocals tumbling confidently to the beat as she offers sage advice that has been earned through her own meditation: “Children are afraid of teachers / What if the teacher was you?” Then there’s “thief,” where little luna flips the script by turning a trail of heartbreak into a powerful statement. One is delivered via swelling racks of drums and strings made all the more spiritual because of its effervescent screams. Even when she take it all off, like she do on the dusty ballad “roads,” Little Luna’s voice and lyricism are incredibly powerful.
And to top it off, she ends it with a title titled “forest,” a twenty-five minute guided meditation that perfectly encapsulates Little Luna’s noble and heartfelt blends of music and meditation.
little luna will be opening for 5 Seconds of Summer for two nights at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles on June 16-17. Visit the little luna website, Twitterand Instagram to stay up to date with new releases and tour announcements.
