Initiated by his master, Shams of Tabriz, Rumi experienced the alchemical process of awakening to divine love. The poetry for which he is now world famous spontaneously flowed through him, pouring out mystical gems of gnosis, of direct wisdom. Often this would happen while he was spinning or dancing ecstatically.

The sema or sama is the prayer ceremony of the whirling dervishes of the Sufi order Mevlevi.

The December 15 celebration in Sedona features four movements of ecstatic poetry and music and three turns of swirling meditation. People are invited to participate in the spinning or to observe. Supervision is provided.

The performance artists are Gabriella Young (poetic transmissions from Rumi, Lalla, Hafiz and others); John Dumas (flute, guitar, didgeridoo, handpan, percussions) and Michael Keberlein (oud, kanun, violin, percussions).
