When your stress levels are high, using healthy coping skills can help you reset and relax.

Stress is part of everyday life. But constant and high levels of stress can have adverse consequences and make it difficult to function.

Research has shown that stress can affect the body, leading to heart disease and chronic pain conditions.

Finding and practicing healthy ways to cope with stress can help you reduce its impact on your daily life and the chances of it affecting you in the long term.

It helps to look within and check yourself daily by naming and recording your thoughts and emotions, says Tanya J. Peterson, a certified counselor and mental health educator based in Oregon.

Peterson adds that pausing when you’re feeling distressing thoughts or emotions can help turn off your fight, flight, or freeze response and calm you down.

Doing this activates the part of your nervous system that signals the body to rest and digest, Peterson says.

Stress is an inevitable part of life, and it is impossible to avoid or eliminate it.

Peterson recommends trying to accept the presence of your stress. But “that doesn’t mean giving up or resigning oneself to stress and problems,” she adds.

By accepting stress, you can stop fighting it. Fighting stress and trying to push it away does not get rid of the stressor. It can even make you more stressed.

Accepting the fact that you can expect a certain amount of stress in your life can help you cope more easily when life throws a curve ball at you.

Meditation is another valuable strategy for coping with stress. Mindfulness exercises or meditation can help you relax and allow you to approach your negative thoughts and feelings from another perspective.

Meditation can be as simple as closing your eyes and creating an empty space in your mind. Or you can try guided sessions using meditation apps or videos.

Ultimately, the goal is to relax and refocus.

Peterson also recommends putting some distance between yourself and your stress. “Remember that you are experiencing a specific thought or feeling, but it does not necessarily represent your permanent reality.”

Ask yourself, “What else is going on at this time?” said Peterson.

What else can you focus on? Is there anything else you can think about besides what is causing you stress?

Distancing yourself can also mean temporarily distracting yourself from what is stressing you. That doesn’t mean bottle it up and forget it, though.

Providing support to friends and family also has benefits. It is essential to ensure that you and those around you give and receive support. One-sided relationships can end up causing you more stress than relief.

“Rather than simply seeking to reduce [stress]divert your attention,” Peterson says.

It doesn’t mean getting rid of stress by having fun. Instead, Peterson suggests, replacing your stress involves taking small steps to add more of what you want to your life.

People seeking drug treatment often face long wait times to access treatment programs.

In a 2021 Herald-News article, Paul Lauridsen, executive director of the Stepping Stones Treatment Center in Joliet, said Stepping Stones receives about 1,600 calls a year for help and can only serve 600 to 700. of those who are then referred to other resources.

That number dropped further during the pandemic, Lauridsen said in the story.

But a new option is now available for people who only need outpatient services: Mindset Transformations of Mokena, which offers a holistic approach using Western and Eastern practices.

“There’s a lot of research that shows they’re effective for recovery,” Hammond said.

What the experts say

It’s debatable whether there is “a lot of research”, but there is. A 2021 paper titled “Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Substance Use Disorders: A Scientometric Analysis and Visualization of its Use Between 2001 and 2020,” said the problem with complementary therapies is that they lack studies based on sufficient evidence, such as randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses.

But that doesn’t mean complementary therapies can’t play a role, given the high rate of relapse among people who receive treatment and the fact that drug addiction continues to rise.

For example, “nearly 296 million people worldwide use drugs, an increase of 28% from 2009,” the newspaper says. Jared Mathieson, Andy Hamilton, Shea Jameson, Joel Stewart and James Murdock formed River Street Promotions (RSP) in late 2019 to focus their considerable fundraising power on supporting teen mental health. Funds raised by RSP go to the Prairie South School Division (PSSD).

However, despite the pandemic, they brought their first event, Homestand ’21, to life at Ross Wells Park in August 2021. The event raised $50,000 for youth mental health wellness, and An additional $15,000 was donated to help beautify the park that hosted the concert. .

“Mental health wellness is very important to our students and to our staff,” said Amanda Olson, Superintendent of Learning at PSSD. Money raised by RSP helped PSSD establish a fund for mental health education, which Olson says has made a huge difference.

Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Wellness [email protected] joined a statewide collaborative project administered by the California Mental Health Services Authority to offer free Headspace meditation apps to the community, available in English and Spanish.

Headspace is a technology application created “to improve the health and happiness of the world”. Reaching 70 million users in 190 countries, Headspace was one of the world’s first meditation apps and is a leader in mindfulness and mental training.

Globally and nationally, the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the mental health of many people and created new challenges for those already suffering from mental illness and substance use disorders. .

Through the Community Mental Health Inquiry process, more has been learned about the impact of the pandemic on mental health at the local level. Nearly 61% of survey participants reported deterioration in their mental health due to COVID-19.

In addition to reports of an increase in symptoms of anxiety and depression, nearly 27% reported feelings of fatigue and lack of energy, and more than 24% said they had trouble sleeping since. the start of the pandemic.

After the significant disruption the pandemic has caused in people’s lives, taking care of one’s mental health is essential to taking care of oneself and building resilience as individuals and as a community.

As a sleep researcher and nursing educator at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Alyson Hanish has seen many colleagues and students burn out during the pandemic.

So when she saw an invitation from the Biden administration, she jumped at the grant opportunity — and will now lead a $2.2 million project to promote resilience and mental health in nurses across the board. ‘State.

The competitive award is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act and aims to retain and strengthen nurses of various levels, as well as students and employers, who work in rural and medically underserved areas.

Nurses quit first year

“We’re in a complicated environment,” said Hanish, a pediatric nurse and sleep researcher who teaches at the College of Nursing. “We know that burnout is on the rise and that about 25-30% of new nurses quit in their first year.”

Her “gut instinct” to do something led the mother-of-three to assemble a team involving the UNMC College of Medicine and College of Public Health, the Nebraska Board of Nursing, the Center for Nursing of Nebraska, Nebraska Hospital Association and Critical Access Hospitals.

“Nurses’ health must be a priority,” Hanish said. She said the team will develop and implement wellness interventions so nurses can, in turn, provide the best patient care.

The team will rely on a stress management program developed by the UNMC called WHOLE (Wellness — How One Lives Effectively). It will be suitable for nurses whose traditional training is to help others, not necessarily themselves, Hanish said.

Declutter the mind and physical space

Examples of stress reduction techniques and strategies to explore with nurses following the grant include: meditation, diet, acute stress breathing, decluttering physical and mental space, even the role that humor can play.

Talking about each other’s stress and burnout is relatively new in the industry, but it’s a pronounced need brought to light by the pandemic, Hanish said.

Certainly, she says, systemic conditions, including staff and equipment shortages, contribute to stress. The outreach offered by the three-year grant will give nurses tools to reduce stress under their control.
